he State Capitol building in Austin, Texas is a magnificent memorial to the high aspirations of architecture. The Capitol is constructed of red Texas granite, quarried less than a hundred miles to the west. The top of the dome is the only state capitol that is higher than the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. This impressive structure can be seen in the top half of the image. The softly illuminated pit seen in the bottom half is the open courtyard of the Capitol Annex, which lies entirely below grade so as not to disrupt the beautiful view of the Capitol from the North.
