he Big Bend region is a place of extremes and contrasts. Ralph and I came across this incredible evidence of the ability of life to hang onto existence in the face of extreme challenges. This cedar tree, clinging to the loose, sandy banks of the Rio Grande, has sent out roots well over thirty feet long to maintain its tenous hold there.
